As a photographer I want my couples to look their best in their photos. The biggest question that I get regarding an engagement shoot is “What should my partner and I wear for our engagement shoot?” So I’ve put together a little how to suggestion post to make things a little easier.
Side note: If you are unsure about your outfit choice, please feel free to pop me a mail with you in the outfit so that I can assist you on your choice.
Small little tips which to keep in the back of your mind whilst planning a shoot:
– Your body type:
The secret to this one is simple. Put effort in your outfit choice. Do not be fooled by the ladies on the covers of magazines and think that they are perfect. They have an entire team zoosh them up.
With this being said; it is important to remember what photographs well. If you doubt your choice, again feel free to contact me.
– Coordinate colors:
Have a look at your venue. If your venue is earthy and in the woods, a bright pink skirt is not the way to go. I’m not by any means saying that you must wear Khaki to “fit into your surroundings”, however a very nice white and subtle greens should go well with the backdrop.
– Wear solids or simple patterns:
Don’t feel that you need to wear an evening dress with feathers and a matching flashing light to “make your pictures pop”. Patterns can be very flattering. Keep the patterns to one item though. Say a nice jean with a top with a pattern. Big, bold patterns tend to photograph best.
– Rather stick to fitted items of clothing:
Clothes that sit tighter on your body vs a baggy pants just makes you look slim and also make you look much lighter on the pictures.
– Jazz up your outfit a little bit:
If you are a person who is known for that signature pink lip then rock it!
Bring yourself with to the shoot. At the end of the day none of us are robots, and hey! Nothing wrong with a lovely pink lip to brighten up your day.
I always like to tell my couples to bring at least two outfit changes.
Not only is it fun to buy two new outfits, but also having a bit of a change up on your pictures look so cool!
Again, consider your location when picking out these stunner outfits.
Things Not to Wear:
– That very bright t-shirt that you bought for your best friends 80s themed party a month ago.
– Anything with large logos on them. A man in a button upped shirt just looks so classy!
Some fun ideas:
Remember what makes your relationship special. If your favorite past time is eating biltong and watching rugby together then incorporate that in the shoot.
Most importantly: Be comfortable and even more importantly, enjoy yourself!
